The Umbrella Is No Longer An Umbrella

Increase your ability of assessing the fair value of an asset, focusing primarily on its share of use.

"Think of a word that refers to one thing – "umbrella" – for example. When you say the word "umbrella", you already see the object with your mind’s eye. You see a sort of stick that has on top of it folding metal stretchers forming an armature for laying a waterproof material which, once opened, will protect you from the rain. This last detail is very important. The umbrella is not only an object, but is something the fulfills a function – in other words, it serves a purpose.

The question is as follows: what happens when an object no longer fulfills its function? Does it continue to be the same object or does it transform into something else? When you yank the material from the umbrella, is that umbrella still an umbrella? You open it, raise the stretchers above your head, go out in the rain and get soaked. It is possible to still call this object an umbrella?

In general, people do so. At most, they say the umbrella is broken. From my point of view, this is a serious mistake, the source of all of our problems. The moment it ceased to serve its initial purpose, the umbrella is no longer an umbrella. It might resemble an umbrella, it might’ve been an umbrella once, but now it has transformed into something else." *

Leadership: Do you make the distinction between the importance of the entire skeleton on which the components of a model of consumption are supported upon and the approach of deforming this model?

Prior to organizing leadership in a new direction of propagating thought, by exploiting information coming from various sources, you must learn to extend your knowledge. This knowledge, beyond common understanding of things, that of separating the "active" from the "passive", or of separating an indicator resources from a consumable resource.

To make the distinction between the importance of the entire skeleton on which the components of a model of consumption are supported upon and the approach of deforming this model, modifying the perception of its value, is the approach that enters the category of qualitative growth of your performance as a good evaluator. A leader evaluates the degree of utility of the resources that can assure the quality of a new approach and the possible modifications that these will bring to a context established by the chiseling of perspectives and directing ideas.

It is the approach you must take into account when assessing the dimension of the "consuming" phenomenon, based on the transformation of resources for the necessity of identifying other resources. A sort of screening for the value added or reduced, obtained on every niche segment you develop, defined by the interleaving of its functions of division and modeling. These functions are useful in order to increase productivity in the exploitation of the practical implications of the chosen vision.

The model of consumption represents a resource required to be used for the production of ideas and the transformation of ides in innovations useful in the future, having an important contribution for replacing old patterns of thinking and limitative beliefs. The capacity of analysis and synthesis you must prove is a key competence in leadership, as in all other fields that have as an objective the development or improvement of a system of thought.

So, you should not ignore the consequences of the deformation of resources that no longer serve as "value". They become a reference factor of analysis in the attempt of appropriating as efficiently as possible the request of interpretation and extrapolation of particular conclusions. These conclusions, objectifying themselves in the elaboration of theories, concepts, doctrines, principles, lead to the development of the practiced field.

The initiative of achieving a foundation from what you can best gain value from, aims to know the share of using the content of resources outside the field of utility of your approaches. Only by focusing on their characteristics, on their specific means of transformation, will you be able to increase your capacity for analysis and synthesis.

The Umbrella Is No Longer An Umbrella suggests that dissociation between concrete aspects and abstract generalities, between the aspects of form and content of the same resource – exploited to create new value. It is a dissociation between the similarities and differences of the same entity of reference, which delimitates the coordinates of a model of thought and creation – specific for the entrepreneurs who know how to manage the power of identifying and increasing the material value of things.
