Harmonic Montage In Cinematography

Harmonic leadership involves the simultaneous integration of different stimuli into a coherent vision, guiding inspiration and execution towards a well-defined "sense of the frame".

In the gang sequence from "Potemkin", the director had practiced "tonal montage", or "melodic-emotional". Harmonic montage is a superior phase. The name derives from music and it also explains the essence of the idea. Therefore, going beyond the method of using a single dominant, Eisenstein notes, by analogy, that "in combinations that exploit these collateral vibrations - which are nothing but the filmed material itself - we can realize, in a way analogous to music, the visual harmonic complex of the frame. This is how the montage is built in "Old and New". That is, built not on particular dominants, but guided by all the stimuli contained in the filmed material."

All these simultaneous stimulating factors compete towards a unity that determines the "sense" of the frame. The method therefore has a "physiological quality", acting directly on the senses of the spectators, as in that music which is built on the double use of harmonies. Not the classicism of Beethoven, but the physiological quality of Debussy and Scriabin.

Creative leadership goes beyond classic editing techniques, transforming each sequence into a part of a "visual harmonic complex" that engages viewers on multiple sensory levels.

During the evolution of cinematography, simultaneously with the development of classical montage, the appearance of a more or less complex harmonic montage technique was reported, the most frequently reported being the use of visual harmonics and collateral stimuli. This technique can also be signaled in the course of Eisenstein's creation, when elements of harmonic montage can be present in addition to tonal montage elements.

Harmonic montage demonstrates the ability to generate normal or superior values of visual impact, increasing narrative complexity and intensity of sensory stimuli.

Films based on classical editing can, in rare cases, be accompanied by elements of harmonic editing, so as to create a unique visual and emotional experience. Often, sequences associated with editing techniques resistant to conventional approaches were described, followed by a complex narrative structure, with the role of accentuating dramatic tension and thematic depth. About half of them were associated with scenes of strong emotional impact, on the grounds that they masterfully integrate images and sounds to amplify viewers' reactions.

Therefore, during sequences associated with harmonic montage, normal or upper limit values of visual impact, increases in narrative complexity and sensory stimuli were reported, and critical examinations revealed the presence of multiple layers of meaning. It follows that harmonic editing can transform a simple story into a deep and immersive cinematic experience.

The stylistic analysis reveals the use of melodic-emotional montage, sometimes associated with the proliferation of visual stimuli; these are associated, in some scenes, with the formation of complex narrative structures with the role of enriching the perception and understanding of the film by the spectators. In particular, close examination reveals the presence of visual elements with strong impact at the level of the frame, the sequence and the entire film, as an alternative to a classical approach, which can seem linear and predictable. Evolution is most often favorable with an appropriate creative approach designed to impress and captivate the audience. Some cases evolve to create a new cinematic dimension, going beyond the limits of classical montage and acting directly on the viewers' senses, similar to the music of Debussy and Scriabin.

The harmonious visual complex created by montage not only maintains the coherence of the narrative, but also intensifies the emotional impact on the viewers, transforming the film experience into a deep and captivating immersion that transcends simple viewing.

Harmonic Editing in Cinematography refers to the subtle interplay between different visual elements by creating a complex sensory experience in the form of a harmonic synchronization between image and emotion. I say this knowing that this method directly influences the viewer's perception through a balanced combination of visual and auditory stimuli that provoke a deep emotional response.
