What Does The Director's Art Consist Of?
Authenticity in artistic expression is born from the delicate balance between truthful and affective, towards a deep and personal meaning of human reality.
The working method of the two artists works perfectly, without asperities. Collaboration always has eight precise successive moments. First Eisenstein shows him the montage of the sequence. Then the sequence is timed and the director expresses his wishes for the music. They express these wishes plastically: "Here, here it must sound as if someone is ripping the child from a mother's arms", or "make it sound like you hit a cork on a bottle". Prokofiev is always delighted by such artistic indications.
Then the composer returns to his hotel room in Alma-Ata, where he transposes the notated timing into a certain number of measures depending on the tempo the music of the sequence is to have. On the plan is a metronome, a stopwatch and sheets not yet written, but with the staves divided into measures and scribbled with all kinds of notes for his understanding only. Once the frames of the composition are precisely fixed in this way, Prokofiev composes the music that fits into this pre-calculated network of measures.

Especially since, when faced with a thematic motive such as "tearing the child from a mother's arms", the art of a director must show his concern to capture the impressive essence of that motive. Therefore, art, as it is, determined by the close collaboration of several artists, must detect what lies hidden beyond the external appearance of a "subject", so, in other words, it must penetrate into the depths of the mystery that the subject tries to reveal it in an innovative way.
The director's art consists in capturing the deep essence of the motive, beyond the outward appearances. He must explore the complexity of emotions and reveal the human impact of tragedy. As for "penetrating the mystery", art becomes a key that must allow viewers to penetrate the mystery of human suffering. It must challenge viewers to reflect on the human condition and the tragedy of borderline situations.

Lapidarily it could be said that the point at which creation must reach, through a kind of metaphor of mystery, regarding any subject taken from real life, must put on metaphorical garments in this creative reinterpretation.

In fact, the director must find a balance between realism and sensitivity, avoiding excessive melodramatism and sentimentality.
