A cultivated, deepened struggle built on the pillars of delusion, confusion, pride, conscience, or freedom of action.

Sometimes assuming the opportunity to experience a completely different world in the story your destiny creates is a component of the self-image that you are crossing into the extremes that give you a certain vision, and not necessarily a happy one about life.
