When you become able to manage your reactions, thoughts and attitude, then you are ready to approach others in an effective manner.

A friend of mine told me a joke, which reads:

A lodger was yelling at his janitor:

- Come here quickly, my mother-in-law wants to throw herself out the window !

- And why do you need me?

- She cannot open the window.

Can you yourself be the antithesis of what others think, provided you believe that what you set out to do needs no further obligation or change?

To position yourself better in inter-human relationships, you must direct yourself to that feasible area in terms of results that you get when you connect with them. What differentiates an excellent leader from a mediocre one is exactly that availability to raise to the level of competence regarding the coordination process of his emotions, to strengthen those bonds that unite him with others.

However, some leaders resemble that lodger – they find it difficult to make a connection with people they dislike and they ruin even more an already complicated situation, attracting others in their approach. They put their leadership in a bad position, by positioning in an area where their negative qualities and values are directly exposed. Such leaders never start from the question: “How can you make sure that you don’t separate yourself from other people?”, before operating their capacity to raise their level of competence.

Just as a model of camera may have advantages over other models on the market thanks to its better and more constant performance measurable throughout the ISO range – so the model of your leadership may have advantages over the model generated by other leaders, thanks to your better and more constant performances in inter-human relationships.

Do you think that the process of capturing the emotion felt when making a decision is the main factor that helps you see the situation from another angle, even if it means enduring your ignorance and your own guilt?

To be yourself in antithesis to what other people think means to evaluate your life and decisions according to the events that you think are taking place in a certain way, not to convince them of the correctness of your arguments about the need of formulating a new idea about reality.

Your leadership model can be translated by the way you relate to those around you. This model does not bring you any benefit if you don’t fulfill your potential through them. Limiting your leadership potential by failure to observe a code of ethics, by restricting those perceptions and healthy thinking positively affects people – it is like going to a game of chess with a baseball bat. However, you will not be able to win any “match” just because you will not even be received in the contest.

Leadership is a contest in which people are the stake - you can win them on your side if you turn them into game partners, not opponents. In leadership, you are the only opponent. You can declare yourself defeated if people draw away from you. When you become able to manage your reactions, thoughts and attitude, then you are ready to approach others in an effective manner. Do you limit yourself to the chessboard or the baseball bat?

Leadership is about how you know yourself when you are influenced by the decisions of others, given that what makes you stronger is your ability to guide other people’s behavior.

The General Indicator Of Performance is given by your close collaboration with people. It is given by that combination of values and principles by which you guide yourself in order to accept others as they are and get them as close as possible to you. Is your leadership model a magnet for other people? Or is it a baseball bat in a game of chess? Do you have to revise your model?

Conclusion: The general indicator of a leader’s performance is reflected in the feedback received from his team in terms of quality of work, cooperation and mutual assistance, as well as in terms of aligning to the required standards.
