The Importance Of A Leader's Vision
Express your vision, so that to induce people acting into its spirit.
I want to start this article with reference to an old joke.
A ship flounders.
A passenger is approaching while swimming to the captain and asks him:
- Captain, how much we have to swim to the nearest land?
- Three miles - answers the captain.
- In which direction?
- Downwards !
Can you determine your attitude to be consistent with a vision that moves the meaning of events “from the top down” without giving definitive and all-encompassing explanations of what is not working?
The joke that I told you highlights very well not only the leader’s attitude, but also his vision. Establishing the vision depends on your leadership’s fund of responsibility.
Some uncertainty in establishing the vision, which depends on your leadership’s fund of responsibility, the lack of strong contrasts between your personality and the flair that you have developed over the years, as well as the indifference towards the intensity of the feelings of those around you, are the sign of a reduction in your level of thinking and approach to the delicate situations (or rather difficult) with which you are facing.
Just as the doctor makes some specialized blood tests to his patient in order to find out exactly the disease from which he suffers, so you - must start in the search of your own hidden capacities, and then develop them, to fully exploit them, and finally to use them in order to achieve the proposed objectives.
Do you set up the direction to be followed straight ahead or downwards?
Leadership is given by the distance that separates you from the land, not by the depths of the ocean.
Someone said that a relationship is like a ship that goes out to sea. While the leadership, I would add, is given by the distance that separates you from the land, not by the depths of the ocean, setting up your direction to be followed - straight ahead, not downwards, but neither upwards - towards the "sunset". The accentuated shades that compose your leadership and that are an extension of your attitude and personality helps you act on the virtue of all you feel, of all you believe that is under those beliefs that help you achieve your true potential.
Do you integrate awkwardly those initiatives worthy of an "underdeveloped" leadership?
A leader who integrates awkwardly, in the term of his planned or spontaneous actions, those initiatives worthy of an underdeveloped leadership – namely those initiatives that do not meet sufficient moral and spiritual support, that leader is not called to lead. He will never succeed to apply the networks used by the real masters in the art of influence, namely those who master the science of leadership with an amazing ability.
The vision is based on the convictions that we have acquired during the life, which limits or gives us strength, which supports or pulls us down, which motivates or demotivates us. The vision is the one that sets the tone in terms of leadership and personal development; it helps us achieve our true potential, allowing us to grow in a steady and natural pace, through the maximum efficiency of our own internal resources and mechanisms.
Is risky thinking the “distance” that separates you from other people, even if you are not ready to activate your courage in difficult situations?
1. What distance separates you away from the other people? 2. Through what exactly is making noticed this distance, what does it indicate? Does it indicate your inability to see the horizon from the distance, and your incapacity to indicate the best direction? Is this distance indicating how poorly you are connecting to people?
3. Does your attitude help you act by virtue of what you feel, of what you believe, or is one of resignation, which obviously will have a negative turn? 4. By virtue of what convictions you build and impose your influence?
I want you to know that depending on your answers to these questions you will be able to measure your leadership. Obviously, it will take some time to reflect, but the answers are very, very important.
Do you allow your beliefs to be influenced by the behavior of others because you can’t consciously control the process they go through?
Therefore, leadership acquires a fundamental importance through the intensity of emotions, of the human feelings, which consolidates our vision. If I would made a comparison, for your better understanding of the vision’s importance is, well, I would say that vision is like a “mailbox” - always announcing us of something related to the direction we follow in our lives, in our business, and in our social and professional relationships.
According to the messages contained by this mailbox, we will better shape our own identity, our own qualities, prioritizing our actions for building the near and far future.
When it comes to vision, the detail becomes significant, the expressive detail, our features find expression – however, the reverse may be equally valid, in the sense that if the vision does not match our qualities, it will limit our performance, and therefore, could not provide a unique value to the leadership that we practice.
Are you looking at a door without having the courage to open it?
How is that possible to practice a leadership by looking at a door without having the courage to open it? For, yes, that door is nothing but the vision that meets you when you start the road. If your leadership is below the minimum limit of your own capacities of orientation, so if the vision with which you fill up your performance does not match the true reality, and if it does not denote more eloquently the beliefs, principles, and the ideology that you sustain and promote, then you will always situate yourself away from your proposed objectives. You will remain nothing more than a traveler who is in a constant search, which wanders from one station to another.
Is it your intention to convey a vision that does not highlight your faith in a reality that requires many compromises?
A vision which is intended to be efficient raises your morale, and does not pull you downwards. Have it ever happened to you having a vision where you see yourself?
I think that is not useless to dwell on this point of view and to analyze if it can be supported in the case where the vision it is not clear or well-defined, or if it cannot come within the state of need that people have to take into account. It is not in the intention of the leader to convey a vision that does not highlight very-well the great belief that he has in it, because it would be risky and almost ridiculous, this thing being able to darken his performance. Hence, from this angle, it is necessary to stop and judge and the leadership practiced by the leader. And what we find?
A vision, which is intended to be efficient, raises your morale, and does not pull you downwards. Hence, it is up to your duty as a leader, or as a future leader, to strive in improving your image about you and your leadership, for reinvigorating the people around you and raising their expectations, inoculating in them constant hope.
Leadership means allowing compromises to manifest in a reality that urges alertness and caution, on all dimensions of the personality-building activity that can push you forward.
The Importance Of A Leader's Vision can be seen in the critical moments, when he must quickly make a decision approving the cancellation of the "resignation" that can be seen in the evasive behavior of people.
