The first images of the film are born. The initial idea is that of "rehabilitating" this czar reviled for his cruelty by all of his enemies, but ultimately animated by a single, gigantic passion: creating the unity of Russia. The monumental figure asked to be painted with the means of the monumental. A man whose enigmatic and frightening gestures are explained only through his titanic effort of creating the Russian State around Moscow.
But director Sergei Eisenstein doesn’t want to absolve Ivan, to show the Terrible or the Gentle. He only wishes to decipher the meaning, the significance of his actions. What is after is not an exterior greatness, and through this, a false one. The monumental is a game of expression of the character and his actions. It will get him close to the understanding and sensitivity of the modern spectator, showing him in all of its complexity.
"This frightening and appealing figure, terrible and charming, tragic in the fullest sense of the world, will become understandable for the modern man when we will think of the battle taking place in Ivan’s soul, implacably facing the enemies of the homeland…"
This is the idea from where the director begins his eternal theme: the struggle for unity. *

Romanian aesthetician, Victor Ernest Maşek, once wrote: "One of the most important lights cast by the structuralist conception of the unitary work is the very demonstration of the fact that the structural elements of a whole intertwine and condition themselves, being reflected in one another."
If these elements are merged into a single moment of impact, based on the analysis of a complete information and not necessarily on personal experience, then the value of creation will evolve towards the status of work, born out of the unique resorts of your own assessment.
You become rich in what concerns the processing of information, possibly distorted or incorrect, only if you get close to the understanding and reality of a model in which you reflect your greatness, showing it in all of its complexity.
He was not wrong the one who said that the complexity of a model of inspiration can be reminiscent to an act of creation.
