The Thin Line of Leadership
Earn people's confidence by planting in their conscience your interest to their true qualities.
A movie worth seeing is the " Prince of the Desert (1991)". Commando team led by Tom Burton has the mission to recover Robert Sanders, the son of an influential business woman Catherine Sanders. Posing as arm dealers, Tom with several members of his team manages to infiltrate the Sahara desert oasis where it was Robert. Nevertheless, to release him from there, Tom had to win, above all, the trust of the powerful Emir Beni-Zair, whose courage, wisdom and leadership skills could not be questioned.
At one point, while walking through the oasis discussing business, the Emir, feeling that something is wrong with Tom, he suddenly stops, turns to him and looking into his eyes with a piercing expression asks him: "Why do you study me all the time?”
Looking into the eyes of Emir, realizing that it is absolutely necessary to displace all his suspicions, Tom replies:
- Anything you say has deep meaning... Only Allah knows what tomorrow brings. However, all he would be prepared for us, I am honored to have known the Emir of Beni-Zair, be he, friend or foe.
Are you able to capitalize on the quality of sharing with the world the fruits of your life experience, in the sense of the existence of a value given to the direct relationship between “free will” and “a heartfelt trust”?
Tom's answer definitely satisfied the Emir’s expectations, which was kind and had the pleasure to believe him simply on his word. A matchless sense has to shake his whole confidence and concern to the ground, and thus to give Tom the entire honor. An important value that can honor leadership is given by that personal opinion that shows how much you value a consideration worth considering when you come to a certain revelation that can change your life.
Trust, respect and loyalty are the essential coordinates of leadership and create the basis from which leaves setting qualitative human relationships. They describe your character, make you more responsible, and put you face to face with the side of your personality that makes you well-pleasing to others, highlighting your true values. You may turn into the person that people want, or you can descend to the lowest level, depending on the effect of your leadership coordinates on them.
Saving a situation that may threaten your position is in your hands. If you are enough able to bring relevant arguments to obliterate any doubt of people, to strengthen their confidence in you, to convince them of the need to establish a cooperation as swift and fair as possible, if you advocate their interests and manifest your approval for what they see in you, then certainly the "line" separating your feelings from theirs will attenuate more, and eventually will disappear.
Just as at digital cameras, all measuring and setting values are represented clear and large on the screen by different colors or different symbols – so, your qualities as an exceptional human and many of your existing skills you are well-represented on the "screen" of people’s expectations, based on perceptions that they form about yourself.
Leadership is an opportunity to learn life lessons that you do not want to forget in difficult times. It is a deep understanding of people, things, events or situations, resulting in the ability to act in such a way that always following your actions creates the impression of intelligence and maturity.
The Thin Line of Leadership gets together or separates you from other people based on their beliefs and feelings to you, depending on how you manage to report your judgment and decisions on the level of their expectations. You will be able to establish strong links with other people only if you find common grounds with them, only if you focus on all matters of importance to them. You can earn people's confidence only if you plant in their conscience your vivid interest to their true qualities.
Conclusion: People are different. The area of separation between them may be narrower or wider. As a leader, you gain ground in your advantage and in your leadership only if you do everything possible to narrow the area as much as possible. How can I achieve this thing? Earning people’s confidence by a deep mutual knowledge and planting in their conscience your vivid interest to them and to their future.
To know to acquaint people, to understand them and even to anticipate their reactions are an art that skillfully handled can in turn to „increase your ranking” and respectively to increase their confidence in you. Or, on the contrary, it leads to diminishing confidence in you, and so to unwanted manifestations and reactions.
