If we manage to be always with them in difficult moments, we will win them on our side - and they will remain grateful to us for a long time.

Yes. In a kind of way, it is needed a payment in advance in order to collect from others the compulsory insurance that would cover us with understanding, with the best feelings in all respects. However, the efficiency level increases only when we receive feedback from people across the way in which we acted on their behalf, for them or against their will.
The Danny's acceptance of cancelling his attempt to escape that would have certainly signed his death sentence; it meant a positive feedback to Willie that could better assess his potential of influence.
In this situation, the condition to be fulfilled and the limit that should not have been exceeded was the act of free will, which concludes that a person becomes aware of their belonging to someone else because they want it, not because it is asked of them. Or that a person who becomes aware of his or her own deficiency or frustration tries to avoid it by resorting to efforts of over-tensing physical and spiritual powers.
Your affiliation to someone else is the first signal that you are no longer the master of anybody, but the servant of a common cause that should not be sought within the horizons of events that facilitate deceptions, but in the transition from rejection to loyalty.
By increasing your potential of influence, without getting a positive feedback from other people it is like you want to make export, but you are in an area that does not trade. Consider the position you want and your level of efficiency. If you want to gain with your leadership, if you want to increase a certain area of influence, then be realistic about the "demands of supply" which are available in that area.
Does anyone need to be saved? How many help requests can you answer? What is their value in virtue of your powers of full authority and ability to be responsible?
However, not all the people will launch "requests" of help. Are you a true leader? Will you seize their perceptions, their inner states, and will you try to give them a helping hand, even if they are unshakeable in their decisions?
Leadership is the way to test your value limits in unfavorable life situations where you have to adjust your affective states and triggering thoughts without ever feeling the need to put one on top of the other.
